Suokylpy, vaihe 2 / Bog Bath: Phase 2

Aamun reissu lähisuon yli oli taas mahtava. Isäntä näet irroitti minut vastuuttomasti lieasta (Lauria ei toki) ja päästi minut päästelemään höyryjä. No niinpä päästeltiin; tuli vedettyä jokaisen vetisemmän rahkasammaleikon ja ojan kautta...lujaa.

Morning trip across the nearby bog was awesome again. The master irresponsibly unhooked me from the leash (not Lauri, of course) and let me blow off some steam. And boy, did I let it rip! I zoomed through every single watery peat moss patch and ditch... at top speed. No stopping to splash in puddles anymore—it was full throttle all the way, whether it was wet or dry underfoot.

My wild zooming disturbed Lauri a bit emotionally and even the master just a little, as for the first time, I sprinted off all by myself until I was completely out of sight. But being the well-trained dog that I am, I returned (almost) immediately when the whistles sounded.

[So for us, "come" consists of two rather quiet, long whistles. In fields or open areas, a silent version is usually used—meaning arms stretched wide for the same purpose. The actual spoken command "täällä" (come) is mainly used in yard areas and training, just so other bipeds realize a dog is being recalled 😆]

Back home, a warm shower was waiting again, along with ear-drying and shaking a couple of towels around as "air dryers." Naturally, the actual drying was done using the master's innovative "Dry Martta without making holes" method—meaning on the command "BANG!", the dog rolls onto her back, and then gets dried from underneath.

Once we were living-room-ready again (yes, Lauri had to get washed too), we got to go upstairs to the scale. This time we got to weigh in fully empty, and the scale showed 22 kg for me and 26.3 kg for Lauri.

And yeah, not a single photo, because that one person doesn't carry his glasses and camera with him 😒

Ekologinen föönaus ja alisuorittajat / Eco-friendly air-drying and underperformers

Tällä meiningillä on Martta-setteri kuiva alle viidessä minuutissa! Nopeus peittoaa tavallisen föönin mennen tullen!

Videossa ja kuvassa on menossa lavastettu tilanne, sillä kameran noutaja oli taas aamusta hitaalla😞

-------------------

and also in English with Gemini:

Let’s start with underperforming—after all, employee capabilities were quite the hot topic last spring. Well, in our household (Lauri’s and mine), the "employees"—i.e. those dangling at the end of the leash—underperform multiple times on every single walk 😜 ...and quite literally so!

When we walk side by side, we tend to swap sides every now and then. If one of the leash-holders doesn’t "underperform", the leads end up in a terrible tangle after the second switch at the latest. This means one handler raises their leash while the other ducks or limbos underneath to match their dog’s side. Then again, "overperforming" is always an option too...

Today, we perfected the setter-drying method mentioned in the title: after puddle swimming and a wash, we start with the usual towel-drying by us owners. At this point, my inner poltergeist always kicks in, and I start yanking on the towel. When the dryer holds firm or the towel keeps getting grabbed, a proper bouncing and thrashing performance ensues! With this kind of energy, Martta the setter is dry in under five minutes! Beats a regular blow-dryer hands down!

The video and photo show a staged setup, as the camera retriever was once again moving slow this morning 😞

Laurin hieronta = Martan sivukaupunkikävely / Lauri's massage = Marta's side-city walk

and also in English with Gemini:

Lauri had a massage today at Koirakuntosali in Kissanmaa (not a sponsored post). An entire hour was booked for the session, so I went for a bit of a walk with the master while waiting. We walked (or rather, for the first kilometer I kept looking around and wondering where Lauri and the mistress had been left behind) towards the Hakametsä Ice Arena. Along the way, there were more wonders and hustle and bustle than back home in Lamminpää. Not so much cars, since we have plenty of those too, but there were even way more people, buses, road machines, e-scooters, and dogs.

We made it to the arena parking lot, where the master immortalized me with the classic building 😀 and from there we continued to the nearby dog park.

There was plenty of time to sniff around all by myself before anyone other than a Finnish Hound arrived to play. He wasn't really that enthusiastic, but after a moment, a boy who looked like a Kromfröhlander popped into the territory. Well, he was a real chatterbox, barking and bossing everyone around. I really had to act humble and sometimes hide behind his owner for cover. Luckily, Lauri's time was almost up, and we got to hustle back to the gym.

A little later, while out on a walk back home, Lauri ran into a really brave/foolish hen pheasant. It took off at a brisk pace just a couple of meters away—straight into my sights. I didn't know how to raise a paw in a point yet, and when the hen finally took off, I ended up standing on my hind legs and barking, so things didn't exactly go according to plan.

Martta ja Lauri koulussa, B1 / Martta and Lauri at School, B1

B1 = toinen kurssi Martalle.

Ensi kerralla ihmetellään sitten Rally-Tokoa...sekin on muuten Laten vanhoja bravuureja💪

Melkein unessa koulun jälkeen / Almost asleep after class

B1 = course number two for Martta. Lauri, of course, has already done a whole bunch of these back in the day. This is an introductory course for various dog sports at Koirakoutsi (not a commercial collaboration), and today, on our first session, the topic was dog shows.

So, all the dog-and-handler teams present (from our household: the mistress + Lauri, and the master + me, Martta that is) set to work according to instructions to improve their skills in standing, trotting, and being examined.

For Lauri, the training went splendidly, although having the trainer "adjust" his head position and upper lip was a bit taxing on him. I wasn't bothered by such things, but the rest of the operations still require some practice. I've grasped the general idea well enough, though, so the master didn't lose his fuse.

Standing goes quite ok, at least for a little while. However, if reaching the desired pose requires corrections, I tend to lose my patience pretty easily 😀. Trotting is also working out satisfactorily—at best, even pretty well—as long as the driver knows how to place the leash correctly and how to motivate me to trot with my head up. Teeth inspection and other handling, on the other hand, are total pieces of cake... well, some more practice is definitely needed before our first match show (in December).

Next time, we'll be checking out Rally Obedience... which, by the way, happens to be another one of Late's old specialties 💪

♪ Aina haukkaa...Martta / Always Chomping... Martta ♪

Lavastettu kuva, mutta tämä sitten sattui😏 / Totally staged, but it still hurt 😏

she's such a Martta..." — and this is supposed to be sung to the rhythm of the old juice commercial tune! 😉

I hear my humans singing this all the time whenever I’ve got a hand, foot, sock, Lauri, bone, glove, or something else in my mouth. Basically, I go teeth-first into everything—except for stranger dogs and people, of course. (Lauri, Pina, my humans, and immediate family are all in the inner circle, though—so they're fair game for a little gentle mouthing!)).

The hard biting from my tiny puppy days was phased out a long time ago, but with these shiny new chompers, it’s just fun to grab onto things "gently." Though, to be fair, gentleness doesn't always go as planned when the target tries to yank themselves to safety a second too late!

This morning, Dad and I stepped on the scale again—together, and then just him alone. Doing the math, my weight is already up to 22 kg! We'll be catching up to Lauri (25.5 kg) in no time. We didn't get to measure my height at the withers because I just wasn't feeling it, but by the looks of it, I'm still under Lauri's 62 cm. Maybe around 59–60 cm.

Hirvimiestä moikkaamassa / Greeting the Moose Hunter

Lauantaina, ennenkuin lähdettiin takaisin kaupunkiin, oltiin aamulenkillä järven toisella puolella. Menomatkalla jo huomattiin Laurin kanssa joku äijä tammen takana istumassa. Kuitenkin vasta paluureissulla saatiin tyypistä tarkemmat hajut.
Passimies havaittu hajulla / Picked up the scent of a hunter on his post.
Evakossa siivouksen alta / Taking refuge while they clean
Metsähenkisyys painaa kotonakin päälle; sunnuntaina veuhkasin oravan perässä ja eilen aamulla vonkasin kauriin jälkiin (kuten myös Lauri, tietty) ja iltapäivästä pihajänis sai kyytiä. Kaupunkialueella tuo talutin kyllä hillitsee päättäväistä lähentymistä.

On Saturday, before heading back to the city, we went for a morning walk on the other side of the lake. On the way there, Lauri and I already noticed some guy sitting behind an oak tree. However, it wasn't until the way back that we got a better whiff of him.

When we got closer, the man turned out to be a moose hunter (orange camo jacket and a lever-action rifle without a scope!). As usual, I dashed over to say hello to the gunman who was just leaving his post. When he conveniently opened his car's trunk as well, I was almost about to hop in 😀... I’ll make a good gun dog yet, even though I'm supposed to turn into something much cuter and calmer...

The forest vibe is still holding strong at home, too; on Sunday, I went wild chasing a squirrel, yesterday morning I was pestering after some deer tracks (along with Lauri, of course), and in the afternoon, the backyard rabbit got chased around. In the city area, though, the leash definitely puts a dampener on any determined advances.

Kiirettä pitää perässäjuoksu / Keeping Up Is Hard Work

Even though Lauri ambled through almost twenty kilometers yesterday, he showed zero signs of fatigue today. During our afternoon outing, we got to enjoy some true free-flight running—the second we passed the gate, a white line took off... with a brown "line" right behind it. After the initial burst of speed, Lauri kindly waited for me to catch up and draft behind him (or was he tired from yesterday after all?), and from there we went back and forth in tight formation.

While the bibeds set to work clearing a path through what used to be a forest...—cleaning up after what looked like the chaotic handiwork of a brush-cutter operator (one wonders which forestry school produced that masterpiece...)—we had plenty of time to explore the neighboring sapling stand. The area turned out to be empty, but we still got nearly an hour of quality running among the young spruces. It also became clear that Lauri wasn't actually tired at all. Or at least I was the one who wore out faster trying to keep his pace.

We got soaked, but it was totally worth it: back at the cabin, dry towels, a warm house, generous food portions, and a solid sleep were waiting for us.

Jotkut saa juosta...toiset ei / Some run... others don't

Vetoakin piisasi loppupuoliskon ylämäkiä lukuunottamatta koko reissulle.

Tässä tilastoa lenkistä / Some stats from the run

Lauri's afternoon walk was a bit out of the ordinary today. He and the Espoo dad decided to head out for a light jog. At first, they were bragging about running a half marathon, but my humans and I figured they'd manage a 5K at best.

Being "abandoned" like that took such a toll on me that after a whole lot of whining, Mom had no choice but to take me out to track the running duo. We didn't spot the runners, but hey, at least we found some chanterelles!

When we made it back to the cottage from our failed search mission, I had to invent all kinds of pastimes in the yard. Like stashing away Mom's glove. Safe to say I didn't get any praise for the burial pit in the middle of the path—nor for the new look of the glove 😉

After a while, a message came in saying they had 8 kilometers behind them... which we could hardly believe. But wouldn't you know it, those crazy devils ended up trotting a whopping 19 kilometers!

Word has it Lauri powered through the whole trip with just three pee breaks and one poop stop. He even kept up his pulling power for almost the entire run, except for the uphill stretches on the back half.

Once back at the cottage, the lake tasted great—both inside and out. However, there didn't seem to be any bad fatigue setting in, because wouldn't you know it, he was immediately ready for a walk in the woods the second he managed to sneak out the door

Suokylpy, pentueskarin loppu ja mökkikeikka / Bog bath, puppy school finish, and a cottage getaway

Iltahämyä / In the evening gloom
Yöksi mentiin saunatupaan, jossa en olekaan vielä yöpynyt.
Sen verran oli outoa, että hieman täytyi pälyillä / Things were weird enough that I had to keep a sharp lookout.

Pellolla / In the field

To spice up Tuesday, I went for a swim in a bog pool during our usual morning walk. It had rained heavily enough that the bog was truly a bog, and the ditch that I usually just hop across had swollen a bit too much for a jump. So, I fell in with a muddy splat, and it took quite a while to claw my way out of the muck while the bipeds stood guard to make sure the operation went smoothly. Luckily, a warm bath was waiting at home 😄 and even being dried off afterward was okay with me (usually I try to rip the towels to shreds).

In the evening, it was time for the final M&M puppy kindergarten class. We headed out with the whole crew, because first we stopped by the store to pick up groceries for our upcoming cottage trip and got a bit of outdoor time. For our puppy class training, we did all kinds of impulse control drills... with pretty good success, so it's a great foundation to build on soon at Koirakoutsi.

As soon as class was over, we zoomed off to the cottage in the evening dark. Piña and her family, along with the Espoo folks, were already there waiting for us... so there was definitely plenty of wild fun in store!

For the night, we went to the sauna cabin, where I haven't actually spent the night before. Settling in was made a lot easier thanks to being allowed to sleep in a big shared bed with the humans and Lauri—though calling it a "bed on the floor" is a bit of a stretch, as it was actually elevated off the ground, just a regular sofa bed.

Then this morning, we went for a walk in the fields. Lucky devil Piña was allowed off her leash and ran circles around me like crazy. But don't worry, we got to rumpus and play together soon enough!

For our afternoon outdoor session, Lauri and I were lucky enough to hit the trail off-leash. Lauri vanished into thin air almost immediately thanks to his supreme speed, even though I was tearing after him tongue out. And thank goodness for that, because a moment later, a couple of dozen meters past us—well, past me and the humans—a bull moose went sprinting by at breakneck speed.

And a moment after that, Lauri went charging right behind the moose at the exact same speed, his belly hair caked in black mud. Calling him back at that point was completely hopeless 😆

Right then and there, I trotted back to the cottage (we were already super close anyway) with Mom right on my heels. Dad stayed behind to wait for Lauri, who checked the spot where the moose originally took off one last time, then made his way back to the cottage and into the lake. He jumped off the dock for a supervised swim to wash off all that mud from his belly...

Espoon ojauinnit / Espoo ditch-swimming

Joku joutui jäähyllekin / Someone got sent to time-out!

No, sitten oli juhlapaikalle palattessa hieman kuivattavaa.

Once the alarm woke us up yesterday morning, we popped out into the yard. Then breakfast, and almost right after that, into the car and off on our way.Once again, we weren't heading to a dog show or dog sports, but first to pick up a carload of fellow travelers and then head towards the Capital Region. As usual, we made a stop at Janakkala's Linnatuuli (apparently that’s been a tradition on trips towards Helsinki for over 30 years with the dogs) and took a stroll along the forest trail to stretch our legs.

Once we arrived, we kicked off the 9th birthday party with plenty of raucous fun! As per usual, I won everyone over by trying to swipe treats from the table, while Lauri—true to form—barked at the men for a bit. It might just be that we aren't the most popular guests among the party-clad crowd with our brutal hunting dog manners😉

Luckily we also managed to get out for some fresh air a couple of times during the visit. The second time, we walked right alongside a wonderfully rainy Friday drainage ditch—or well, 'alongside' is putting it lightly: according to my human, I ran excitedly for a whole 300 meters right in the roadside ditch with the water reaching up to my belly! I didn't keep track of the meters, I just kept right on splashing. Well, there was a bit of drying off to do once we got back to the party venue.

The trip back home was driven in the dark and all in one go, so it was great to get home and wrestle teeth-to-teeth with Late now that there was a bit more room for our social activities.

Jäteauton ystävä / The Garbage Truck's Best Friend

(toim. huom: 😝)

Hieman lepiä aamun reissun jäljiltä / Taking a little breather after our morning outing

I've got a rather unique taste. Last week, I tried my best to make friends with the biowaste truck because of the irresistible aroma of apple cider wafting from it (ed. note: the stench of fermented apples). Now, I’ve spent the last couple of days arguing with whoever happens to be at the other end of the leash about whether I’m allowed to lap up the juices spilled from the garbage truck (ed. note: gross!). It’s been a constant battle over these tasty juices every few dozen meters, as there are puddles leaked from the container in front of every gate.

Today, my human made it his mission to walk down the street with a watering can and a brush to at least dilute the stinky spots. Cleaning up one stretch of street doesn't really bother me, though... since the whole neighborhood is full of those patches! (ed. note: 😝)

Martta 6 kk / months

How about a little extra.... pretty big for a six-month-old already.
Martta on the right and Lauri on the left.

The day kicked off with a brisk bog run. It’s a pity nobody brought any recording gear along; we would've had a textbook video of a workout in the sphagnum moss. Mud was flying just like in Mika Myllylä's glory days.

After this light depletion workout, it was time for the scale and height gauge to celebrate the six-month milestone. The scale read 20.7 kg and the height gauge was around 59.5 cm. So we're pretty much at hunting dog proportions now. By the way, Lauri weighs 25.2 kg and stands 62 cm tall. Naturally, the celebratory feast only came after the weigh-in—just like with boxers, wrestlers, and anyone else playing the weight game.

Autettiin ikkunanpesussa / We helped with washing the windows

Tai oltiin ainakin häiritsemässä. Isäntä kun yritti laappia laseista kesän aikana kerääntynyttä pölyä ja etsiä ikkunanpuitteita siitepölyjämien alta. Ensin toki piti siirtää emännän kukkasia muutama kymmenen hieman sivummalle, ja samalla paikkoihin, joihin yletyin helposti näytteenottoon. Isännän onneksi Lauri tuli myös auttamaan työmaalle pötkähtämällä sohvalle kiusattavaksi. Meidän hammastellessa isäntä pesi ikkunat ja emäntä ikuisti osan ajanvietteestämme.

Or at least we were getting in the way. The master was trying to wipe off the dust gathered on the glass over the summer and search for the window frames beneath the pollen residue. First, of course, we had to move a few dozen of the mistress's flowers slightly aside—and conveniently into places where I could easily reach them for 'sampling.' Luckily for the master, Lauri also came to help on the job site by flopping down on the sofa to be teased. While the two of us were teeth-wrestling, the master washed the windows and the mistress captured part of our pastime on camera.

EuroBirdwatch -day after saunapäivä / Sauna Day

...ja tässä tämänpäiväinen / that´s all folks

and also in English with the help of Gemini:

Hey, I went to the sauna for the first time yesterday (Fri)! True to form, Lauri didn't join, and the humans figured I’d stay well clear of the sauna bench, too. But nope—practically as soon as the door opened, I climbed right up to the top bench for a stretch and stayed in the heat for as long as it took the master to finish a sauna beer. After that, with a little guidance, I knew to step outside... and come back in of my own accord... and go outside on my own... and come back in and go back out... :)

Saturday and EuroBirdwatch Day started off great, as I spotted a swan right away on our morning walk. The plan was to keep steadily racking up species points (or is it birds?), but it didn't take long for things to hit a snag. Before we knew it, about a hundred roller skiers were powering up the hill on the paved walkway... well, in reality, maybe 30! Luckily, at that point, we were already slightly on the forest side, and the master managed to scoop me up under his arm to squirm. Once the crowd had finally passed, my main desire was to dash for shelter somewhere deep in the woods, and it took some time to calm down again...damn climate change, I hope we get snow soon anyway.

On our afternoon outing, I at least managed to add a couple more species to the list: a crow and a jackdaw. I guess we won't be taking top spot with these results.

Hanhia kattomassa / Watching the geese

Palailtiin tuossa hetki sitten omenainkeruureissulta toiselta puolelta kaupunkia.

Havaitsin hanhet / I spotted the geese.

Siellä ne menevät / There they go

We got back a little while ago from an apple-picking trip on the other side of town. The master decided to take us out for a walk in the Rantatie 'event park'. So, we swung by there and first set off strolling toward the dog parks. Lauri caught a whiff of some lovely scent from behind the fence, so for the sake of his peace of mind, we did a quick U-turn and climbed up onto the embankments. From up there, it was wonderful to watch the glitter of the sun on Näsinselkä… or rather, the colony of barnacle geese cackling on the Pispala side. Somehow our instincts drew us toward the geese, and the master tagged along ;)

We didn't manage to get very close unnoticed, as Lauri lost his cool with our slow approach and started barking. The geese, of course, took off into the air with a huge commotion of cackling, leaving us standing there empty-handed, watching the flock.

Mind you, even I couldn't stomach the goose droppings, even though it had already been nine hours since my last meal.
